I like scuttlebutt's design in principle. But every time I've tried it, I've run into severe bugs and UI issues. For example, the Patchbay app just froze and/or crashed every time I launched it. I had to blow away and reinstall a bunch of files to get it to work again. And it's not really P2P yet. In order to join, you have to be invited or find a public pub server. If you want private chat rooms, you have to host them on a server. (And private chats are still very experimental.)

There's no mechanism for syncing across machines (such as your phone and laptop). So you have to have an a different account on each machines you want to connect to the network from. Also, a lot of the main developers are lefty SJW's who are busy trying to figure out how they can censor the Scuttlebutt network. I didn't want to have to keep quiet, lest I offend their delicate sensibilities.

If I have to run a server anyway to be able to control who I can invite, and to host private chat rooms, I might as well use XMPP based servers, which are much more reliable and battle tested.
