That's not aging, that's the result of cancer surgery.

Increased cancer risk is a symptom of aging.

In October 2001, Dr. Campisi and her colleagues published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science showing that premalignant and malignant human epithelial cells grow more rapidly in culture with senescent fibroblasts than presenescent ones.

Because older organisms harbor so many more senescent cells than younger ones, this could mean that aging is providing cancerous cells with a fertile environment for growing tumors.

I feel like it's still rather disingenuous without providing further context, and kind of a crappy tone to set for an otherwise great article.

I've seen similar photos from a woman who had the surgery when she was still a child. Things can happen that will suck for you as a human being, young or old. Aging may increase some of those risks, but stating that it 'sucks' without further information isn't going to help educate people as to what the correlation might be.

I thought it was common knowledge that increased cancer risk is correlated with aging. There was no intent to be "disingenuous".

As for setting a crappy tone, Ebert's lost half his face, the ability to speak, and is eating paste from an IV bag. That he's made the best of it is great, and I applaud him for it. But I think it sucks.

I'm guessing you didn't read the article. It's amazing and I highly suggest taking the time out to read it.

It is an excellent article. Why would you assume I didn't read it?

Damn.

Guess it really is true that "growing old isn't for pussies".
