A sobering thought

I generally see my parents twice a year–once during the spring or summer, and once during the winter holidays. My parents are in their late 50’s--let’s say they're both 58 years old. Assuming they live to be 78, I will see them in person approximately 40 more times before they die.

Oh, ouch. My parents are both 65, and I don't get back east twice a year. :-(

You aren't factoring how very often you'll have to go visit them when/if they become infirm in old age.

Either my husband or I or one of his siblings or one of their wives has to travel a thousand miles at least once a month to see my in-laws as they age badly far from family. I will personally see them on at least three separate occasions (each for a week) this year, probably four. Same with my husband, except two of those four occasions will be on separate trips. (That makes either my husband or I or both of us traveling down to see them once every other month.)

I will see my parents 0 more times before they die. Take the time while you can, even if you dislike them, because they are the only parents you will have.
