In another sparkling example of the democratization of finance, a Web site, Marketocracy.com, gives investors the chance to post their own model portfolios for scrutiny. The 100 best performers, called the m100 Group, then become the source for a publicly available mutual fund, Masters 100 (MOFQX, 888-884-8482). The fund, now a little over a year old, is down just 4.9 percent since inception, at a risk level that's about half that of the market as a whole. The benchmark S&P 500 is off nearly 20 percent over the same period. A year isn't enough time to judge a fund's success, but we're keeping an eye on Masters, which has been heavily weighted lately toward small-caps, especially gold and consumer stocks. Among the fund's top picks, according to its most recent online newsletter, are Quiksilver (ZQK), maker of casual clothing and snowboards; Petsmart (PETM), pet-supply retailer; Harmony Gold Mining (HMY); and William Lyon Homes (WLS), a West Coast home builder.

Totally off topic - I'll be down in NC again on Dec. 18th. A bunch of us crazy people are going to see the Two Towers if you'd like to join us. :)

Okay, it's gonna be around 8pm at Crossroads on the 18th. Your ticket is being purchased for you in advance (if you change your mind I'm sure we can get rid of it). I'll give you more info later. :)
