In another sparkling example of the democratization of finance, a Web site, Marketocracy.com, gives investors the chance to post their own model portfolios for scrutiny. The 100 best performers, called the m100 Group, then become the source for a publicly available mutual fund, Masters 100 (MOFQX, 888-884-8482). The fund, now a little over a year old, is down just 4.9 percent since inception, at a risk level that's about half that of the market as a whole. The benchmark S&P 500 is off nearly 20 percent over the same period. A year isn't enough time to judge a fund's success, but we're keeping an eye on Masters, which has been heavily weighted lately toward small-caps, especially gold and consumer stocks. Among the fund's top picks, according to its most recent online newsletter, are Quiksilver (ZQK), maker of casual clothing and snowboards; Petsmart (PETM), pet-supply retailer; Harmony Gold Mining (HMY); and William Lyon Homes (WLS), a West Coast home builder.
