...when they sell "Country Music Weekly" at the grocery store checkout stand.

And what better way to celebrate my arrival in the South than some X-rated country songs?

[The following country songs contain lyrics of a extremely frank and explicit nature. Listener discretion is advised. At the very least, please refrain from inserting one of these into the songlist at your next wedding. Please direct cold, disapproving stares and irate messages to my friend Toli Lerios, who was gracious enough to send them to me.]

What is it about life in the heat that makes for explicit lyrics? When I lived in the Caribbean, I noticed that as well in Soca music (caribbean dance music).

Examples:
First you have to lick it before you can stick it
Grind Me
My Ding-a-Ling
Wet Me
One Cock Alone...

And I always thought the southern US was conservative in their community standards, especially on the radio that any child could tune into.

Well, I don't think any of these songs have appeared on NC radio--the SEC would pull the license of any station that aired them right quick. This is the state that sent Jesse Helms to the senate after all, so I think that there's a high percentage of "pinched lips" here.

Plus Toli's living in Austin, Texas, and as we all know Texans are different.

Did you hear those songs on Caribbean radio?

I'm pretty sure these were played on the radio. You'd here the songs everywhere though, and no one was doing much to protect kids' ears from the words.

Regulation in the Caribbean is extremely different from our heavily regulated world up here. I'm sure the radio stations had very minimal requirements. The main music stations were located on other islands, though, so I couldn't tell you the requirements.

It makes sense that the x-rated country songs aren't played in NC. I _thought_ they were more strict that us northerners. ;)
