The Sawdust Shop is an open access woodshop, along the lines of the TechShop, except for woodworkers. Also, check out the Bay Area Woodworkers Association.

That's great! Do you know of any other open access places (not just wood centric) in the South Bay area?

Well, there's also the TechShop in Menlo Park. There's also The Crucible in Oaklan. I'm not aware of others in the South Bay.

Anathor option: Check for an adult ed program at your local high school. I signed up for adult wood shop at venice high for a nominal fee. Not only was there a professional quality woodshop, but also a guy to give me pointers.
