It's not even intellectual masturbation. It's a complete abomination compared to what debate should be, as the end of the video implies. It's more like playing a game of Magic or something than a rhetorical battle.. you have your deck, your opponent has his, you throw your cards at one another and see who wins.
I want to see that film. I heard an NPR piece about it awhile back and it seems that debate has degenerated a lot since I participated some 25 years ago.
Minnesota HS debate used to be an island of calm, slow-talking sanity in a world of speed-talkers, but what we used to call "shitspread" (multiple rapid points hoping to "slip something past" your opponent) was catching on even then.
