Having worked in a library myself, this would work almost every time. In fact I can't think of when it wouldn't (save if you get spotted being a crook).

I feel so dumb

All this time I've been killing the librarians and replacing them with cloned and brainwashed gollums to get out of library fines.

I think this method would be much easier. From now on I'll forgo the former method...

Pays her taxes. Checks the box to pay the higher rate. Sheesh.

Or you can just move to Ashburn, VA -- they don't have fines at the local library.

Wow. Any idea how their shrinkage rate compares to libraries that do charge fines?

Probably not a whole lot -- their method is if you don't return it, you can't take out anything else.

If they automated with RFID, you would realize you were in a different universe. Or wake up. Something like that.

*laugh* that's pretty funny. just make sure the library you try to do this in doesn't have RFID. i work in a library as a clerk and i pretty much think library fines are a waste of time. the money that people pay in fines goes back to the government, NOT the library. ugh!!

i think it really boils down to your interaction with the clerk. if you are rude and condescending, the clerk will more likely want to charge you just because of your behavior. if you make the accusation that someone didn't check in your book properly, you will get on the clerk's bad side (because the clerk is probably the person who checks the items in.)

something to keep in mind is that every time you have a fine waived, that interaction is kept in your record. if you have a long history of these interactions, the staff will catch on to you and might ban you from the library.

Thanks! That's good to know. I always try to stay on the good side of my local librarian. Wouldn't want 'em to leak out the sordid nature of my library habits.
