Be careful when chipping out the ice from a defrosting freezer. The metal covering the freon lines is remarkably thin.

oh man. that sucks. I did that a few years ago. Had just moved in to a basement apartment. The freezer was in *horrible* shape, so I decided to work on it on a week night. It took so long, I decided to go in and forcibly work on the ice.

ummm. yeah. There is a reason there are stickers on there that say, "do not use that screwdriver by the sink to chip at the ice".

I bought my landlord a new refrigerator.

Hope this doesn't wind up costing you too much.

Thankfully, it is a relatively inexpensive under counter model. Still, it's ~$200 I'd rather not spend on a refrigerator right now.

Oh boo. Freon stinks and makes everything in the fridge smell like it.

I misread that as "chipping out the mice."

Hahaha! A month's supply of rats and a bottle of Kentucky Jack. Really, what more does a bachelor need?

(What's the story? Snake food, I presume? )

Hmmm, the trick I used back when I had those type of fridges was simply to leav it open with a candle. It would melt even thick ice in about 2 hours.

You can also put some salt on it.

I wonder if Mr. Freeze has that problem?

My friend just did that to our kegerator recently. He ended up paying about $160 to get it fixed, and then he put foam type stuff in the shaft through which the tap line goes in order to prevent so much ice from forming inside it in the future. The guy that fixed it didn't do that much work - if you can weld, you can probably fix it yourself and refill it with freon.
