Tattoos

Via [livejournal.com profile] shanmonster:

I'm not normally a fan of tattoos. In most cases, the tattooo does not improve upon the natural beauty of clear, alabaster skin. However, I think many of the tattoos of Grisha Maslov (NSFW) are quite lovely.

That scorpion one was really creepy. *shudder*

Quite cool. Not something I'd get personally, but very few things fall into that category. One of these days I'll get my wolf tattoo done, but I don't intend to rush on it.

I particularly like the Da Vinci style werewolf done for the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, though I feel a bit sheepish admitting the origin of the design I'm considering, even though it fits quite a few of the requirements dead on.

What are your design requirements? Do you have a link to a picture that best illustrates the tattoo you're considering?

As for its popular origins, movies attract some of the best visual artists of our age, and the Potter production team can afford to hire the best of that lot. So I hope you don't feel too sheepish.

After a hell of a lot of searching, here's a link: http://www.hogsmeade.com.br/images/werewolfslide.jpg

It's an extremely elusive image to find, as it appears on screen for all of 3 secs, and wasn't used elsewhere as far as I've been able to tell.

It's basically the Vitruvian man, done as a werewolf. Same style, pose, and overall design of Da Vinci's original drawing in silverpoint. The design of the wolf isn't exactly on what I'd like, but the overall style is certainly along the right path.

There's a considerable amount of personal symbolism behind the whole wolf tattoo, and it's something I've been considering for a good 6 years now. It's only recently that I've found any sort of design I'd be interested in keeping around on a permanent basis. I am, to say the least, exceedingly choosy.

Ooh, thanks. That would indeed make a nice tattoo--a clever twist on a classic picture. I had forgotten about that scene from the movie.

It's too bad that no one has come up with a semi-permanent tattoo (that lasts say, for a year.) I wonder if the dyes this guy invented could be adapted for the purpose.

Yeah, I have a fairly deep adoration for Da Vinci and his work, so the added twist of a Da Vinci inspired take on the overall wolf idea is incredibly appealing. As I said, it's only on screen for a few seconds, so it's not something easily recognizable as HP fodder, which is a definite bonus.

Yeah, I'd really enjoy something of that nature. Henna is good fun, but it's gone in a week or two and fairly limited. Something of a slightly more permanent, but not forever, basis would be a big cash cow as people would be able to decorate their bodies based on (comparitively) whimsy.

I currently have a tattoo! It's about 1mm in size, on the inside of my right hand, ring finger. I accidently jabbed myself with my ink nib one night while sketching with calligraphy tips and it's never gone away. Looks a bit like a freckle, but is ridiculously amusing to me in a 'I'm such a dork' way any time I see it.

Heh. "Hey, wanna see my micro-tattoo?" [show them your auto-tattoo] "It's the latest thing for those who don't wanna get a full-size. Can you see the unicorn?" If they say yes, then you can mock mercilessly.

I wonder if you could make a tattoo with a controllable dye? So that each dye molecule could be in either an on (dark) or off (transparent) state depending on whether a current was applied. Maybe glue on an ultra-thin film LCD (with the thickness of saran wrap)? Then you could have moving pictures and a different picture each night.

Damn, the domain's been suspended. I remember searching hours and finding nothing after the movie came out.

You wouldn't happen to have the image saved, would you?

I do have it actually. Email me at my user name @ gmail .com and I'll mail it to you. :)

They do have a whole grace to them, don't they? I think it's they way they seem to flow so well with the natural body lines. A lot (maybe most) tatoos don't do that and then end up looking, well, artificial and unnatural. Grisha Maslov's do seem to sort of flow and enhance the look/lines of the body as opposed to the standard tatoo "cover it up" approach.

Yeah, if asked, I would still recommend against getting a tattoo. But if you're going to get one, I would recommend a Maslov design over most I've seen.

And that, kids, is the reason why you don't get a tattoo in prison.

You know what, I didn't even notice that part. I was too fixed on the whole Mr. Cool Ice portion to note that bit.

.....

It's even worse than I first thought. I wasn't sure that was possible.

What kind of ice?

Have you ever seen UV tattooing? It's not completely invisible in daylight due to potential scaring of the skin, but it's quite hard to see without black light:

Sadly, the examples on that page, with the exception of the first flame tattoo, seem really bloody obvious even without the UV lighting. I have seen nearly invisible examples though, so I suppose it depends on who you go with.
