The efficacy of breast augmentation: breast size increase, patient satisfaction, and psychological effects.

Young VL, Nemecek JR, Nemecek DA.

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.

In this study designed to quantify the degree of breast enlargement produced by augmentation mammaplasty, 112 women who underwent breast augmentation were interviewed. The size increase that typically resulted from various implant volumes was measured by comparing preoperative and postoperative bra sizes. For the study group as a whole, the average increase was two bra sizes (either increased cup size or a combination of increased cup size and chest circumference), regardless of the implant volume inserted. Patients also were asked a series of questions to evaluate the impact of the surgery on various psychological parameters, including body image, feelings of self-confidence, and interpersonal relationships. Along with having a very positive body image, the group reported decreased self-consciousness (86 percent) and heightened self-confidence (88 percent); in addition, 95 percent said they felt better about themselves after surgery. The women's satisfaction with the results of augmentation and the success of surgery in meeting their expectations also were measured. Eighty-six percent reported being completely or mostly satisfied with the postoperative results, 86 percent felt the operation was a complete success, and 95 percent said that augmentation met their expectations.

Not to be a jerk, but that's not really an accurate title.

The abstract suggests "Boob jobs make women who wanted boob jobs happier" which is very different.

It's easy to imagine that you could get similar results with people who'd been tattooed or body-pierced, but (I hope) you wouldn't summarize the data as "body piercing makes people happier."

Fine, fine. Updated with a more accurate title.

Yeah, I'm sure all those women who got boob jobs but didn't want them are miserable. Heh.

I guess if you're going to get a boob job you already feel like it'd make you happier, more confident, etc. So it figures that when you get one you probably would, since that's what you feel is lacking. Hmm.

But you'd think there might be more buyer's remorse.

I suppose so. I guess it seems like mutilating yourself in such an expensive way is serious enough that you wouldn't do it until you'd really backed yourself into that corner. Maybe someone who had remorse would even repress it, because it's not something you can erase very easily.

I've been asking about the opposite question -- breast reduction -- and my completely informal, not statistically valid survey says that women who undergo BR are overwhelmingly happy they did it. (Me, I'm a little leery of the knife, but other than that I can soooooooooo understand why they're happy afterward.)

Yeah, I can see how overlarge breasts could be a real hassle.

Isn't the suicide rate of people who get boob jobs higher than that of the regular population? Are they just so happy they could die?

I don't know. I've never seen statistics on the suicide rate of implant recipients.

Perhaps they're unhappy to begin with, and think that improving their appearance will magically fix everything, and are dismayed to find that it does not.

That's the popular theory.

I've wondered whether laser eye surgery will be as fulfilling. The people who get it can't stop talking about how wonderful it is.

OH, eye surgery is awesome. I feel so much more confident now. I was popular with the ladies before, but now I can't keep 'em off me. "Your eyes. I can't stop looking at your eyes. They're so beautiful!"

That's interesting. However, I spoke with a woman who had both a boob joba dn eye surgery, and she said that men still tell her, "Your breasts. I can't stop looking at your breasts..."

Essentially, she feels the eye surgery was a waste of money.

Eyes sans glasses are no match for freshly inflated boobs, it's true. However, my boobs bring me all the attention I can handle as it is.

Hey crash, I'm a 27 year old mother of four young children. My husband loves me the way I am, but I am interested in having my breast enhanced. I found this page on the net and thought I would see if you had this done and if so, do you have any advice or know of a good informative site I can go to. I'm new at using the internet so hopefully you will get this and can reply to me. Thanks for your help.

I'm actually guy--my claim to have had a boob job was a joke among friends. I don't really know much more than what you've read in this blog post. If I were you, I'd do a google search for "breast augmentation" and learn as much as you can about the procedure you're contemplating. Try to fnd a mailing list of women who've the surgery, and ask them how they found their surgeons, as well as the questions they asked to evaluate their quality. Good luck!

I'll second [livejournal.com profile] crasch. I can't keep the ladies off with a stick, now.

Hey, I saw the stick you're using, it's a dried out twig! Admit it, you're not trying very hard, and only doing it so you can tell Wonderbunny you're not soliciting women.
