Went to Portland, OR last weekend to help my friend Robin move. Got to visit Powell's City of Books. They claim to be the largest independent bookstore in the world, and I believe them. The main store on Burnside takes up an entire city block. Four stories worth of books....

It's well organized into several rooms of different colors (Red Room, Green Room, etc.) Each room is devoted to different subjects. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful--they even agreed to mail--free of charge--a book I had left behind.

Highly recommended.

Bah. Overrated in my opinion. I'd prefer a small bookstore (maybe used) where the guys behind the counter know me, and know what they have in stock.

Not having that, i'd go for Barnes & Noble. In spite of being a huge superstore, they have a great queer selection, good sales on all kinds of stuff, great magazine selection, and their books are far better organized than Powell's.

Don't get me wrong. I love Barnes and Noble too.

I was only there for a day, so perhaps I didn't see the disorganization that you observed.

I once went to Portland just to spend a weekend browsing in Powell's. That was one of the most enjoyable weekends I've had in a long time.
