Branson wants to have Virgin in Space by 2007
(27.09.2004)

Sir Richard Branson has announced that the Virgin Group have set up a special company to offer commercial space flights by the year 2007.

The investment costs for this new project are expected to reach around $100 million. However, with the interest in Space flight increasing, there should be no shortage of customers willing to pay an expected $200,000 for a trip.

Each flight is expected to take around 5 passengers and the journey will last from 2-3 hours.

Initially, the flights offered by "Virgin Galactic" will only be provided from the United States and Branson predicts that 3000 people will buy tickets for the flights over the first 5 years. The cost of the flight will also include a few days of flight training.

With the investment costs not especially high and the cost of a trip well within the price range of many successful business people, the venture looks as if it will be a profitable one. No doubt, as the service is developed, the cost will fall and make this experience available to a much wider market.

For those who perhaps thought that Space travel would never be possible in their lifetime, unless they were one of the elite few, it seems that they have a real chance to make their dreams come true.

Once again, Branson and the Virgin Group will be boldly going where no commercial company has gone before. May the force be with them!

This is fantastic. Think of how little this will cost in two decades. Think of how common it'll be.

My parents, who were born in the Eisenhower administration, could be taking a Space Cruise for their 40th wedding anniversary.

I'm exceptionally hopeful.

crap crap crap.
We don't need this type of consumptive and excessive tourism.
People need to learn to entertain themselves.
Now, if this could be legitimately justified through research....

Yeah, way to exploit the last frontier. Now where will we dump our plutonium? Haven't we already laid waste to this planet already?

Amazing journeys like that one are [only] one of the reasons I get so annoyed with people who try to justify high taxes on multi-billionaires by saying "what could anyone possibly need with more than x amount of dollars." Here's to Richard Branson, Paul Allen and the other filthy rich individuals who are paving the way to the future, making all humanity profoundly more wealthy. Ad Astra!

This is an amazing.

In 1950, commerical airplane flights were only for the wealthy, now anybody can afford to cross the globe with cheap airfare. With private industry in space flight, we will be able to vacation on the moon in 60 years.

Burt Rutan, Paul Allen and Richard Branson will be in the history books for the next 200 years.

Just a quick comment on taxing the rich... only a few responsible wealthy people share their wealth to make life better for all. High taxes on the rich is justified, but give them huge tax credits when they do the right things for society

thank you

A fan of Paul Allen?

I never thought I would be a fan of anything related to Paul Allen, but I am now thinking of writing to his office to see if I can get an autographed photo of him with Spaceship One. It's worth noting that it was a bright computer guy with a new fortune, not an old money landed Barron who funded this project.

Burt Rutan has always been my hero, but I never realized that someone like Paul Allen would come along and write the right check. Wow I'm extremely impressed with both of them.
