I obviously like LJ, but there are several features missing that I'd really love to have:

* ability to add memory keywords at the time the enty is made
* search past comments/entries (I know about LJ search, but it's a third party tool, and seems to only get public posts)
* edit comments after they've been made

I can see maybe why the latter two haven't been implemented (too resource intensive), but the first one seems easy to do, and wouldn't add much additional load.

This (http://www.livejournal.com/community/lj_nifty/114353.html) is a pretty nifty tool that I downloaded a few weeks ago. It archives your entire journal and the comments and allows you to search all your entries.

Thanks!

I agree about the memory keywords and would love it if they could make it work like the categories on del.icio.us. A simple text field where you put comma seperated values so entries can be referenced and cross-referenced. That would rock!

Agreed! I'd love that.

It is easy for them to allow us to edit changes. They have intentionally taken away that ability as someone can edit a comment after there have been replies. If someone replied to your comment with "yes", then they don't want people changing their original comment to "Do you like to rape babies?" or something like that. It is just a way to reduce troll activity.

If that's the case, I think it's a mistake. There are better ways to deal with trolls than to hobble the 98% of the membership who are not trolls. For example, they could retain an edit history, similar to the way that Flutterby handles comments.

The malicious changing of comments is in fact their stated reason (at least it was a couple of years ago, the last time I saw it brought up). You should see if they've looked into these other ways.

I don't know how Flutterby does it, but I agree with you that retaining an edit history would be preferable to the way it currently works. I know I have often noticed a mistake in grammar after making a comment that I wish I could correct. Sometimes, I'll delete the comment and post a new one, but that doesn't always work well, because someone might reply to the original comment instead of the corrected one.

If LJ allowed comments to be edited, each edited comment could have a disclaimer beneath it stating that "this comment was edited after it was posted, but before anybody replied" or "this comment was edited after someone replied to it" and link the discliamer to the original comments. Perhaps I'll include such a feature if I ever write my own blog software :)

Yeah. Too frequently, I leave at least one typeo, and it really bugs me.

Here (Question #73) is the discussion I had remembered from [livejournal.com profile] news. [livejournal.com profile] bradfitz replied to a comment about a revision history that he said that he'd be "down for that", but no one had time to do it.

Thanks! As I suspected, it's a resource issue.
