I have yet to hear one good argument against gay marrige, even tho i could think of a few valid ones. It's allways "Immoral" this and that. And excuse me, but my morals are MY business...
In fact, it seems that it would be better to allow marrige rather than civil unions, as evidenced by the state of europeans abusing the privlidge.
I'd agree, but i can't think of a single governmenlarge enought to be called one that doesn't somehow act as a marrige regulatory body.
There is too much money involved, insurance, jobs, taxes, all tied in to the variable of marrige. No one is willing to topple so many chips for any ideal, without promise of substantial gain.
*sigh*
The real marriage is in the head/heart anyway, everyone knows it's just a peice of paper otherwise. This is aknowledged in the notion of commonlaw marriage in most countries.
Marriage is but one more way of social control by government. Registering potential parents to make sure their children will be included in the mind and body control machine, using fiscal tools.
Marriage is evil. Gay marriage is more evil.
Instead of increasing evil by allowing gays to marry,
repeal the laws that institute marriage, and get the government out of personal relationships -- which means, abolish government.
Individuals should be free to conclude arbitrary contracts to regulate themselves their mutual relationships.
Your point is well recieved, but like i stated earlier, it's easier to build up institutions than to tear them down... seems they are more vunerable to entropy.
if you can formulate a suitable ideavirus i'm game.
Just privatize them. Churches were made irrelevant once they were separated from the State. Marriage will be irrelevant when it's a private matter once again: no registration, no taxation, no aids, no nothing. -- Just private contracts, private foresight, private charity, etc.
From my basic knowledge of US contract law, this is probally possible, but due to the huge reductions in taxes, insurance rates, and other miscelaney, people have a large monitary reason to register their bond.
I happen to know personally a few people who have tied the knot unofficially, some wrote a contract, some did not, but they are quite few.
And despite the myth, church and state aren't as well divorced as we would like. Whomever rules the minds of men, dictate their actions to an extent. In my part of the country you would get expelled from a public school for reading a non-christian document. I almost did.
Sure the church isn't the state anymore, but in no way has that made them irrelevant.
On the subject of separation of church and state, see my article Church of Freedom. Which also reminds me of the conclusion of the article Panarchy by P.E. de Puydt says of religion...
That's priceless! When I started reading it I expected it to be something about the constant fearmongering regarding terrorism. I laughed when I saw the end. :-)
