Compare these two:

Wait -- were any cars harmed in the making of this cocktail?

Worst spin doctoring? How many articles have been written about about the bad spin doctoring? All of which mention the "evil" SportKa commercial?

Brilliant, I say.

The resourceful analysis and exploitation of a viral marketing opportunity is brilliant, yes. The follow-up responses to being called on the bluff, however, are not brilliant.

(If you'll accept a subset definition of "spin doctoring" as: efforts to influence external judgement of past actions.)

Hmm. Come to think of it. The very disregard for having a plausible defense that's acceptable in polite company might be quite popular with the demographic they're going for!

Hmm. Yes, I agree with you. Brilliant. Yes, I come away thinking of the dashing, unshaven rogues in these marketing groups, with cat skulls skittering around their ankles as they zip through the HOV lane. After all, the kitty counts as a passenger, no?

Heh.

There was another SportKa ad that aired in the UK, that showed the car parked beneath a telephone pole. There was a songbird perched on the telephone pole, chirping away; then it flew down toward the car...

...and the hood flew up and smacked the bird, knocking it out of the air.

Sadly, the Web site at www.the-eviltwin.co.uk is down. It had all the ads archived, as well as wallpaper and other fun stuff. (For a long time, the desktop pattern on my iBook was a picture of a SportKa roaring out of Hell, sending angels and seriphs and unicorns and other heavenly creatures scattering in its wake.)
