Ever eat asparagus then notice that your urine smells funny? If so, you're one of the people who can break down asparagus into it's particularly smelly parts, and who also have the olfactory receptors for detecting said smelly bits. I'm one of those people.

Recently, I've discovered another food that causes the same phenomenon: popcorn. I've found that if I eat a large bowl of popcorn, my urine will smell like popcorn the next day. Anyone else notice this in themselves?

I was kind of wondering if that was just me.

Nope. The funny thing is that I didn't really notice it until recently--I guess I never ate that much popcorn as in the past.

Coffee. If I drink coffee my urine smells like coffee. Even if I drink coffee flavored soy milk.

Also, cherios. My urin will smell like cherios.

There is also a vitamin I take that turns my urine green and makes it smell like the asparagus smell with brunt rubber I am not sure if it is alpha lipoic or ibendium (sp?)

Huh, interesting. Must try out Cheerios.

I was just going to say "Coffee, too!"

But now that I think about it, I think Cheerios is oddly right, too. Although it's been a long time since I've eaten Cheerios. What could possibly be in Cheerios??

I didn't realize that the asparagus thing wasn't universal.

If I eat or drink a whole lot of anything, it's possible my urine or sweat will smell of it. I've definitely noticed this with coffee, for example.

The picture implied everything we needed it to. You HAD to go and point out what everyone was thinking.

I wasn't hungry for THAT right now! Maybe later. I guess I was really in the mood for asparagus. I should go out and see how it is doing in the garden!

Sometimes an asparagus is just an asparagus!

And just what does "traditional" taste mean? How do non-traditional asparagi taste?

Is the plural of asparagus asparagi in English? And what unit defines "an asparagus"?

I never noticed the popcorn thing. But now I fear I'll have to try it. Just in the name of scientific pursuit.

If it isn't, it should be. "Asparaguses" just sounds wrong.

And what unit defines "an asparagus"?

Why the Asparagus Nomenclature Unit, of course.

I never noticed the popcorn thing. But now I fear I'll have to try it. Just in the name of scientific pursuit.

Sometimes, science does have it's perks.

I don't really like asperagus so I can't say much about that. I have a freakishly sensitive nose and can detect the odors of almost anything I eat that is fairly fragrant in my urine.

Interesting. I notice fluctations in the way that my urine smells, but I've only noticed a connection between asparagus, popcorn, and maybe broccoli.

Other people have had similar questions but answers are not always easy to come by.

Other people have questions about Food Dye and fecal coloring (Since we're on the topic of urine, I thought I'd take the conversation one step lower)

Of course there are aspects to this kind of question that may disturb some people.

We are what we eat, and this frightens me.

Gotta get me some purplesaurus rex. If you could somehow sneak it into someone's food, it would make a great practical joke.

cheerios. once my exboyfriend told me about the cheerios thing when i was at his house eating cheerios. a couple of hours later i went to pee, came back, and, utterly astonished told him he was right. he was completely repulsed and told me he never needed to know that. i was quite bewildered by his reaction. was he being weird or was i?

Yes, I've only noticed it with asparagus though, not popcorn. With asparagus though, every time. I thought it was kind of freakish when I first noticed.
