Freedom Island

Thursday, February 12, 2004

Brass Rail, Benson Memorial Center, Basement
Santa Clara University

Hong Kong is an island of relative freedom in an ocean of government
interventionism. Hong Kong has made the liberal blessings of freedom
apparent for all to see.

Can more Freedom Islands come into being? There are three
requirements: (1) A group of people and resources committed to freedom
must come together. (2) They must gain control of the territory that
is to become a Freedom Island. (3) External powers-neighboring
governments, the U.S. government, the U.N., etc.-must not prevent the
organizers from realizing Freedom Island.

Spencer MacCallum has pursued the vision of achieving a Freedom Island
by voluntarily means. He has explored possibilities in Somalia and
Costa Rica. He has explored the idea of creating a Freedom Island at
sea and in space, and these possibilities become more viable as
technology advances.

MacCallum holds a bachelor's from Princeton and a master's in
social anthropology from University of Washington. He has explored
these ideas in his book The Art of Community and in articles in Human
Organization, The Independent Review, Critical Review, and Modern Age.

Interesting, but would his effort be better aimed at helping the Free State Project succeed?

Also, Costa Rica is awesome. The PML (Costa Rican Libertarian party, see their website) won 6 of 56 seats in Congress in 2002, and got a pretty good percentage of the vote for President. One of the 6 Congressmen left the party due to ideological differences, but the ideals of liberty are taking root there.

Add to this that, in the sea of violent revolution that is Latin America, Costa Rica has only had two brief periods of violence in the last 150 years, and has been historically a democratic if somewhat socialist country, it's a great site. If the Free State Project doesn't reach 20,000 people, I'm learning Spanish and moving down there. Hell, it's warmer anyway. :)

Also, as far as Freedom Island at sea and in space, the man behind the defunct Oceania project has started a new project for multiple space colonies in case of something like a nanotech disaster, to create a human diaspora in space. The benefit of this is that each Lifeboat would be autonomous, meaning some could be libertarian.
