I lost my cell phone on the plane over the Christmas holidays. So I decided to buy a Treo 600, primarily because I wanted to listen to books-on-tape (purchased from Audible.com), without having to buy and carry yet another device in my pocket.

Unfortunately, although Audible.com content plays on Mac OS X, and plays on Treo 600, you can't currently transfer them from Mac OS X to Treo 600. Damn DRM! Anybody know of a good way to rip Audible.com content to unencumbered MP3? Or a good source of non-DRM audiobooks?

I don't know, but that might be a good question to ask at Ask Slashdot. The topic of DRM for media content often comes up. This is yet another example where DRM obstructs fair use. :(

Thanks for the suggestion. If nothing turns up, I'll try that.

I have not personally tried it, but supposedly Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com/) converts audible files to mp3.

Thanks! Unfortunately, it appears to be PC-only.

Have you tried the P2Ps?

Thanks! Yes, I've tried Kazaa, Limewire, Poisoned, etc. The P2P's are good for relatively short bits of content (no more than 5 - 10 minutes), but aren't so good for long content. Audiobooks range from 6 - 12 hours long, so typically they're hacked into numerous smaller segments to make for easier download. They're also a niche market so not so many people have them on their hard drives. As a result, it can be maddening to try to collect all of them in order, even for wildly popular books like the Harry Potter series.

you should contact me..

Just burn your audible book onto a cd-rw. Then you should know what to do.
