One of the problems with living off of your long term food storage is obtaining fresh vegetables. Sprouts offer one solution, since they can be stored for 3 - 15 years (depending on storage conditions), yet can be sprouted with simple accessories in week to provide fresh vegetables. Therefore, I'd like to try sprouting different varieties of seeds to see which I like. Anyone else grow your own sprouts? Which sprouts do you like?

Almonds!

I love almond sprouts. They don't really sprout, but I soak them a couple days before grinding them up and making a milkshake with vanilla and honey.

The other sprouts I've tried and liked are lentils (the green ones). I sprout them until they have about a half inch tail and then mix them into a salad with lemon-honey dressing. Yummm!

Yeah, sprouts are great. The world's hunger and malnutrition problems could easily be solved with sprouted grains. I think I remember hearing about some programs that used them with a good deal of success.

I've tried radish (which is nicely spicy) and a few others. A tablespoon full of seeds, after about 4-5 days gives you two or three big fistfulls of sprouts. THey go good mixed into soups and the like. Making the best of basics has some very good info on sprouting along with lists of a few dozen seeds to sprout and what their tastes/uses are.

Any health food store will have all sorts of sprouting stuff. Several preparedness outfits will sell you sprouting seeds packed in mylar bags for long-term storage. Considering all you need to sprout seeds is some water, a jar, a piece of cheesecloth and a rubber band, its a pretty easy way to do things. Since fresh greens may be an issue in a crisis (esp. in the winter months), sprouting has alot of appeal. You can have several jars of sprouts going on at once at various stages so that you can have fresh greens everyday.

Almost any health food store/organic supermarket. Look for the supermarket with all the Volvos and hemp-wearing people.

I like alfafa sprouts. My Mom grew them frequently when I was growing up.

I like sprouting wheat, it is far more nutricious than unsprouted wheat, and tastes better, too. I sprout it, then cook it overnight in a thermos bottle to save on fuel. Costs about 5 cents for a very filling breakfast.

The correct answer is... Sunflower sprouts. Easy to grow, and totally easy on the tongue/tummy.
