* I'd like to find a source of wooden boxes, the same dimensions as those letter-size storage boxes (also known as "bankers boxes"). Ideally, they would have either dado, or finger joints, and be made of hardwood. Does anyone know where I can find such things? BookCrates has something similar, but the wood they use is quite rough, and I'd like boxes without openings and an even surface.

There is a few local woodworkers that I know are eager to all sorts of small jobs for people in hopes of getting their name/work known, and larger projects in the future....

Not only do you get excatly what you want, but usually a lot cheaper than buying 'off a shelf'.

Go local!

What do you plan to use them for?

Initially, just bookshelves. However, in the future, I have this idea of using them as modular furniture. Install a few of drawers, put a board on top, and voila, a desk. Or stack three with drawers length-wise, and you have a dresser. Put hinged plexiglass doors on them, bolt them to the wall, and you have a cupboard. And so on.

Too bad you're on the right coast because I am needing some woodworking practice. I'm building furniture out of sheer necessity (all the stuff I like is about $150 more than I want to spend).

What are you building?

Right now, chairs. Once I'm more acquainted with the challenges of building stuff, then I'm going to proceed to making a two-person glider for the porch and possibly a loveseat or bench for inside the house.
