Hey, I just discovered a nifty new Marketocracy feature. (As some of you may know, I work for Marketocracy.com We run a stock market simulation in which our members can create virtual mutual funds. The trades and holdings of the top 100 members on the site are mirrored by the real money mutual fund, MOFQX.)

If you create a fund on the site, you can cut and paste the graph of the fund into a message board, like so:

Note that this is a dynamic graph--as your fund ages, the chart will be automatically updated. The red line is Nasdaq, the orange line is the Dow, the green line is the S&P500, and heavy purple line is my fund, the Iron Books Value Fund. Sigh. Note to self: next time, be more careful about investing in a bankrupt company.

Thanks. Sorry for the annoyance--I put in a link to an admin version of the site. Should be fixed now.

The red one looks like Citigroup.

This is so cool!

Chris,

Thanks for introducing us to marketocracy.com. I found it especially fascinating because I'm getting my degree in finance and preparing to go off into the investing world. That is so very cool--what an amazing concept!

If I may ask, how long have you been with the company and what do you do there?

I've been working for the company since November, 2001. I wear two hats. Under hat 1, I work as a quality assurance engineer. So I test the website when we make changes to try to catch any bugs that may have been created. Under hat 2, I work customer support--I answer the angry e-mails that result if I'm less than fully successful in my job under hat 1.

BTW, have you ever gone to an Extropy meeting? I seem to recall meeting a Jessica from San Diego at the last one I attended.

What do you want to do in the financial field?

Chris,

Thanks for answering my question! I've done customer support, so I know what that's like. It certainly inspires you to do job #1, doesn't it? :)

I've never been to an Extropy meeting, but I'm sure that I'd like it---I've read some extropian stuff and it's right up my alley. Is there a link to a calendar of events for their meetings?

As for the financial stuff, I'm still deciding which direction I'm going to take. Right now, I think I'm going to go into money management/financial planning first. Any suggestions or ideas you have would definitely be appreciated---I'm still at the point where I can change direction if I find something really inspiring.

Jessica

Yeah, member's an get rather ...colorful... when they're not happy about something with the site. You can find a calendar of events at their webite, http://www.extropy.org.

What kind of work do you enjoy doing most? For example, do you like talking to people? Do you like analyzing data? What do you hate to do?

The extropian links looked very interesting---thank you. When they have something on the West Coast, I'd like to go.

I actually enjoy both talking to people and analyzing data---and talking to people about analyzing data! :)

What I hate to do is glorified data entry, recommend products I don't believe in, and do the same thing over and over.

What I really like most is to generate creative solutions to problems and optimize people's financial situations (help them to save money on interest expense and save their money from the government. I also like to generate creative business ideas---how to finance something, how to maximize benefits to all parties, etc.

Any suggestions?
