Happy 4th of July!

It's that wonderful time of the year whereby we celebrate armed revolution against oppressive government.

And there is much to celebrate! There have been significant expansions in human liberty since the founding of the US:

the abolition of slavery and ending of Jim Crow laws
the expansion of suffrage / property rights to all adults
the end of sodomy and other homophobic laws
increased protection for blasphemous, obscene, and pornographic speech (both de facto and de jure)
end of military draft

Unfortunately, it's still highly profitable to parasitize humans--government officials directly control trillions of dollars worth of wealth in their official capacity, and indirectly control trillions more via their control of the regulatory apparatus:

As a result, there are strong incentives for government officials to:

Brainwash the citizenry (especially children) to support the authoritarian state
Expand the scope and power of the state to create more opportunities for rentseeking
Increase taxes
Suppress threats to state power
Persecute individuals believed to be a threat to state power
Seize control over the money supply
Suppress speech that does not agree with official dogma

Even in relatively free countries, people are kidnapped, caged, and murdered by government thugs for ridiculous "crimes":

One way to fight back against such predations is via traditional politics: lobbying, voting, campaigning. But that route is slow, costly, and uncertain. The existing players have rigged the political system heavily in their favor, and only rarely is it possible to make significant changes.

Another option is to simply disobey.

Do what you want, regardless of the law. Hire that illegal immigrant. Buy a "happy ending" massage. Snort that darknet coke. Make yourself a machine gun. Bake a quiche with raw milk and non-USDA approved eggs. Smoke that blunt.

Politics typically lags culture. Gay people received de facto respect for their rights in cities like San Francisco and New York City long before sodomy laws were officially struck down by Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas (2003). Millions consume(d) cannabis in contravention of state and federal laws, before states started to decriminalize cannabis production/consumption.

IMO, it's only after a liberty becomes culturally normalized does it become politically possible to reform the law.

For example, Obama and Hilary Clinton didn't openly "evolve" on gay marriage until 2012 and 2013 respectively, after polls showed that a majority of Americans supported gay marriage.

Therefore, as part of your celebration today, I invite you to subvert a dumb law. If you're feeling brave, do so publicly. The more people who are seen breaking the law, the less practical effect the law has, and the faster we'll move to a more open society where people are free to do and speak as they please without fear of government punishment.

Maybe you're not feeling brave enough to break the law. In that case, maybe you can offer encouragement behind the scenes for the tall poppies willing to speak up publicly.

Or maybe learn (legal) methods to protect yourself if the law someday decides to come after you. Cut out the middlemen (Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, etc) and connect to your friends directly, so you can't be so easily censored. Learn how to use private, anonymous money, so that you can survive even if the government directs banks to cut off your funds. (As the government has done to many disfavored industries and individuals in the past.)
