And then there are the guys who have seen or visited the women of places like Russia and/or Brazil. Guys always talk about how beautiful the women are and how almost all of them are perfect 10s. How does this tie together? Think about it for a moment. Most men say that all of the women in Russia and Brazil are beautiful, yet these are the very same men that say or believe that they will never be physically attractive to women because they are too short, the wrong race, their face isn't up to par, or they're too skinny.

I have a question for said men. Why are almost all of the women in Brazil and Russia beautiful? Is it because they somehow imported a perfect gene pool? Anyone with half a brain knows that this isn't the case. Then why are most of the women of Brazil and Russia beautiful? It's because they aspire to be beautiful. That and they put a lot of pressure on themselves to be beautiful (I remember seeing a woman from a poor neighborhood in Brazil somehow finding a way to get some kind of discount plastic surgery).

The vast majority of those women weren't given perfect genes, and if you pay attention, you will see that these women vary. Some have better-looking faces than others, some are short while others are tall, some are skinny while others are curvier, and some are blondes while others are brunettes. All of that diversity, yet men wholeheartedly agree that the women of Brazil and Russia are among the most beautiful in the world.

How does this relate to you? I believe that when a guy complains about being too short, being the wrong race, or not having the perfect face, he is just looking for an out. He is looking for a way out of hitting the gym, he is looking for a way out of buying costly nice clothes, he is looking for a way out of paying for expensive skin products, he is looking for a way out of paying for costly dietary supplements, and he is looking for a way out of getting his weight down. Overall, he is just being cheap and lazy, and looking for any excuse not to improve his appearances.

He has a point about making excuses for not taking care of one's appearance, but nice clothes, good skincare and hygiene, and a healthy diet don't have to cost a fortune. It's like using lamp wire vs. buying Monster cables for your stereo.

I also think there's something to be said for rocking the unattractive look and totally owning it. Take Carrot Top, for example. He's totally juiced, but no known force on earth could make him cute or funny. From what I've heard, though, he's a pretty nice guy. Also: Steve Buscemi, Jack Black, Rick Moranis, Woody Allen, Rowan Atkinson... And I'm sure there are plenty of non-celebrities who have been able to trade on their unusual looks to play up their other interesting qualities.

I agree that one doesn't have to spend a ton of money on appearance. And he would agree as well. However, like most things, it's a tradeoff of time and money. Cost is a often a good heuristic for finding clothes that are well-made and well-designed.

I also agree that if you're dealt a bad genetic hand, then it helps to make the most of it.

It's interesting though that Brazil and Russia are neither the wealthiest places on earth nor the happiest. I think a lot of the "beauty" of women in Russia comes from the country's severe gender imbalance in favor of men. Gender dynamics in mainstream Russian society are fairly messed up. From what I saw in the Russian parts of Latvia, the guys were (on average) total slobs who put little effort into appearance, while the women (on average) were trying *very* hard to be attractive to men but were also unashamed to use them for money or other gain.

Sometimes I wonder if there's a female equivalent to the male seduction culture, where unattractive women can learn to lure in desirable men without hitting the gym, getting made over, etc.

There's a much simpler explanation for Russia. They lost something like 1/3 of their eligible men in WWII. That allowed the surviving men to be very selective.

I agree that it probably played a part in the development of Russian culture. Why do you think Brazilian women also have a "dress nice" culture?

No idea. I only felt qualified to comment on Russia because of my familiarity with WWII history. I'm not very familiar with Brazilian history at all.
