Tom Lehrer is still feisty and funny, but the king of sophisticated satire tells Tony Davis there's no place for his style of humour now: the world just wouldn't get it.

'I'm not tempted to write a song about George W.Bush. I couldn't figure out what sort of song I would write. That's the problem: I don't want to satirise George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporise them."

The speaker is Tom Lehrer, arguably the most famous living satirical songwriter. And, in a roundabout way, the New York-born singer, composer and mathematician is explaining why he has been all but silent since 1965.

Lunch?

Now that my hair's mostly grown back after a regrettable experiment in personal grooming (hey kids: cutting your own hair is harder than it looks), I'd love to meet some more of you local Raleigh folk in person. Craigslist is a venerable S.F. Bay area institution. Everything a Bay resident needs can be found on Craigslist--a basement apartment in the Haight, a '94 Honda Civic with only 78 K miles, even a witty geek girlfriend.

After moving to Raleigh, I lamented the lack of Craigslist. So I was pleased to find another Bay Area transplant felt similarly, and created Raleigh's very own Raleighlist.org.

Raleighlist's still too young to have its version of Best of Craigslist, but if it did, I'd vote for this guy's personal ad.
